Washington, DC CNN —Americans racked up a record amount of credit card debt in 2023, soaring past a trillion dollars. “Consumers still have a lot of money left over to be able to spend, so the credit card data is often misinterpreted,” Russell Price, chief economist at Ameriprise Financial, told CNN. According to a LendingTree analysis of more than 350,000 credit reports, the average unpaid credit card balance was $6,864 in the fourth quarter. Overall, US household debt (including credit card balances) rose to a new high of $17.5 trillion in the fourth quarter, up 1.2% from the prior three-month period. So, while there certainly isn’t a shortage of economic hurdles bedeviling people’s budget — and credit card debt has surged — the big picture indicates that, so far, Americans (and their economy) remain healthy.

Wall Street returned to its winning ways this week — and Nvidia 's blowout earnings report Wednesday night was a big reason why. Twenty-six of our 32 portfolio stocks have delivered their results this earnings season (we didn't own Abbott Labs at the time of its report). It was a muted week for macroeconomic data, but we did get a slightly better-than-expected January existing home sales report on Thursday. In the week ahead, two more Club names are set to report earnings before a market-moving economic update arrives Thursday morning. The two other reports of note are the January new home sales report on Monday and ISM Manufacturing report on Friday.

"That was a big wet blanket" for the IPO market, Greg Martin from Rainmaker Securities told me. Buy now, pay later firm Klarna, another oft-mentioned IPO candidate, told CNBC it has no immediate plans to go public. This is in stark contrast to most years, when big IPOs went public in November and December. A month earlier, in November 2020, Sotera Health raised $1.1 billion, and Miravai Life Sciences raised $1.6 billion. By contrast, a normal year should see at least $50 billion raised.

Benoit Tessier | ReutersCava GroupFirst on this week's list is the Mediterranean restaurant chain Cava (CAVA), which made a blockbuster public debut last month. The rally in CAVA shares since its initial public offering reflects investors' optimism about the fast-casual restaurant chain's growth prospects. Stifel analyst Chris O'Cull initiated a buy rating on Cava with a price target of $48. The analyst estimates annual revenue growth of 20% during the next four years, driven by at least 15% growth in Cava's footprint. The survey revealed that Services' average revenue per user (ARPU) in the U.S. is $110, which is much higher than Daryanani's global estimate of $81.

This spike bodes well for the IPO market, bankers say, because both new listings and secondary stock sales rely on strong demand from equity investors. "Historically, follow-on activity of this magnitude should lead to animal spirits in the IPO market," said Daniel Burton-Morgan, head of Americas syndicate for equity capital markets at Bank of America Corp (BAC.N). The IPO market has been in the doldrums since the start of 2022, when Russia's invasion of Ukraine and a spike in inflation fueled a bout of market volatility as investors fretted over U.S. interest rate hikes. The week of June 5 saw 19 follow-on and secondary stock sales in the United States, totaling proceeds of $6.6 billion, one of the highest weekly tallies since the end of 2021. Mediterranean restaurant chain Cava saw its revenue rise 12.8% in 2022, according to regulatory filings released Friday as it filed to go public through an initial public offering. Over the last five years, it's converted Zoes' footprint into new Cava locations. Last year, the company's net sales climbed to $564.1 million, 12.8% higher than the year earlier. The company has 263 locations open as of April 16 and plans to open 34 to 44 new units by the end of the year. May 19 (Reuters) - U.S. cloud-based restaurant manager Restaurant365 has turned a 'unicorn' after a $135 million funding round, the company said on Friday. Start-up funding space, which is reeling from liquidity crunch since last year, has started to see some signs of relief. "The primary driver of this round is uniting with two strategic investors so intimately tied to the restaurant industry," the company said.
